Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing—or 3M, has been an innovator in the adhesives and abrasives fields since the early 1920s. The first masking tape was actually newspapers stuck to an automotive windshield with putty. 3M invents stuff that helps us get our work done more quickly, cleanly, safely, and—more elegantly. You know they are successful by how many people try to copy their products. Beware of the fake blue tape, and of cheap sandpapers that fall apart. I personally use the Hand-Masker system, the Long-Mask Tape, and the 8511 Particulate Respirator with the valve that allows hot air to escape. These products improve painter comfort making it easier to stay on task.
